Gotham's Two Tier Structure
Gotham Soccer is devoted to providing New York's best amateur soccer. To facilitate this, in Fall of 2009, we're moving to a two tier structure for our weekday evening Men's 11 a-side league. This will enable us to provide more even competition to all the teams in the league, and a higher level of competition to those teams in the 1st Division. Also, to make it more exciting at the top and bottom of the tables, we will be having a promotion/relegation system. However, because of limitations that an amateur league faces, in comparison to a professional league, our promotion/relegation system will need to be more flexible.
Currently our overall goal is to move to two leagues of 11 teams each, 10 games each season, although this is very dependent on two factors that we have only minimal control over: 1) field space, 2) available teams. For gaurenteed promotion to the 1st Division a team will need to win the trophy in the 2nd Division. Although, if there is a need in the 1st Division to maintain it's integrity a second place team from the 2nd Division can also be promoted into the 1st Division. Furthur, a team faces the possibility of relegation from the 1st Division to the 2nd Division if they place within the bottom 2 teams of 1st Division. Again this is dependent on the needs of the league to maintain the integrity of the overall league. As new teams enter the league, they will enter in the 2nd Division.
The minimum size of the two divisions must be 6 teams in each division, with the stated goal of 11 teams. If it is neccessary to reorganize the leagues to maintain this minimum, it will be done by the prior seasons rankings, as with determination for qualification for the championship, with points first, goal differential second, and goals for third. This is above and beyond the normal promotion/relegation structure. If there ever comes a time where less than 6 teams are in each division, the two tier structure will condense back to a single division of 11 teams or less.
As we reach our goals, we hope to create more stability in the top divisions by following up with an additional lower tier to the league and moving to a longer season for the top division, of either 1 or 2 seasons per year, allowing more teams to join the elite ranks.
